September for us has been a waiting game – “Those that wait on the Lord will renew their strength”. We have been waiting for news about a work visa, hoping there will be booster jabs, and waiting for a final medical report for Peter after his operation. Praise God each day the Lord renews Peter’s strength. We wait patiently for all these to be resolved as we think of returning to Nepal. In Nepal people are still waiting to be vaccinated. The Covid-19 death toll has now passed 11,000. Sadly, news of infection and death is a daily reality. Over 17 million doses of vaccine have been received from various countries – but the challenge is to administer these to those most in need. During the week ending 21 September, in UMN’s Rukum East cluster 3,684 people were vaccinated against covid with their first dose. In collaboration with local government and two partner organisations, United Mission to Nepal (UMN) cluster staff helped bring vaccines into remote hilly areas and in some cases even carried elderly people to centres by piggyback to receive their vaccination. KISC (Kathmandu International Study Centre) has been waiting patiently to get back to learning on site and on 21 September all staff and pupils returned to site with only a few children electing to remain at home and receive online learning. Class bubbles are being enlarged so two classes can interact and school is now providing cooked lunches. Many classes are having their lessons outdoors, however the monsoon rains make this challenging. The annual festival of Dashain is celebrated from 7 to 15 October. This is the most important holiday festival each year and tens of thousands will be returning to their home villages. This will undoubtedly bring a rise in Covid numbers once more as families meet in large numbers to honour their gods and perform sacrifices at the temples.
Prayer Points:
• Pray that no further treatment is needed for Peter. • Pray for the safety of all officials engaged in the task of getting people to vaccination centres. • Pray for good relationships developing through the work of UMN in the remote communities they serve. • Pray that families and staff at KISC will be kept covid free over the Dashain holidays.
